September Volunteer of the Month: June Magnaldi

Even if it's been a week or two since we've seen Emily around the farm, we know that when June Magnaldi is around our favorite goose will come running. Emily literally follows our resident goose-whisperer around where ever she goes.

June has been helping at Veggielution once or twice weekly since June of 2011, taking the 1 1/2 hour bus ride from Santa Cruz to get here. She's been a Workday Leader for most of that time, and takes the responsibility of educating her volunteers very seriously.

August: State of the Farm

Our tomatoes are exploding off the vine, along with many of our other crops. We are averaging about 3,000 pounds of produce harvested each week at  this point in the season.  The harvest is taking up a large portion of the Farm Crew's hours each week, but there's still all the maintenance work we have to keep up with, such as seeding, transplanting, weeding, pruning and trellising, and other chores.  With a year-round vegetable farm, the work never ends.

Stories from the ground: Dig Crew 2013

The Dig Crew, Veggielution’s summer high school program, is only three weeks away from ending! The end of this year’s Dig Crew is a bittersweet thought.  Although I will be so proud of each one of them for putting in their all and completing the program, the farm and my life will not be the same without them!  During the Dig Crew, youth are challenged to take a good hard look into where food actually comes from in the United States.  Youth work out on the farm in the morning, getting hands-on experience with sustainable agriculture practices in hopes for a deeper understanding of how much work goes into the food they consume.

Welcome, new board members and summer interns!

We are pleased to introduce the new members of our Advisory Board, JD Stager and Brian Spitz!  JD is the owner of Stager Construction, and Brian is the owner of Spitz Design and Machine.  We're so glad they are joining us!

We'd also like to welcome our new bookkeeper, Elif Soyarslan, and our "summer crop" of interns!  We are lucky to have 16 interns helping us around the farm this summer.  Keep up the great work!

The importance of a tractor

It's been about 2 months since we've had our rental tractor onsite, and if you've been out here you can see that this machine is transforming the face of our farm on weekly basis.

We are in the midst of an online campaign to purchase this tractor, and as the Farm Director  I wanted to explain to you all why this investment is so important and what it means in terms of labor saving.

Volunteer of the month: Roberto Martinez

There are several reasons I volunteer at the farm: meeting people of all ages with a like-mind towards out environment and making new friends, getting off of the couch and getting my hands dirty with rewarding outdoor activities. Passing on life-skills I have acquired during the course of my life to those that show an interest. Having a sense of accomplishment at the end of the day and just getting some healthy sunshine and exercise.

February: State of the farm

February weather has arrived. We've got warmer air and some trees are even blooming. I checked in with some of the community gardeners from the front of the park this week and the word is that it is time to seed peas. If you haven't gotten your potato seed yet you better hurry because in our area it's best to plant them third week of February. We began seeding tomatoes and eggplants a couple of weeks ago. It's a great time to seed or transplant Brassicas and other cool season crops that don't require too much heat to germinate.

January: State of the farm

The new year is bringing changes of epic proportions to our farm. Seriously, if you haven't been out to Veggielution since November of last year, you will barely recognize it the next time you come out. Our new farm stand, packing shed, cooling shed, potluck area and demonstration kitchen are 2/3 complete. These buildings make up Veggielution Village, the new hub of the farm where folks will congregate. We've also made great progress on installing the irrigation system on our new four acres, and a second greenhouse is going up nicely. We've made great progress on the infrastructure that will make 2013 the biggest year for Veggielution to date. However, January is a critical month to get these projects completed so that we can start the year off right with new, completed facilities. We are still in need of new farm equipment, such as; a tractor and implements, irrigation supplies and hand tools. So please consider donating to support these projects.Read More
