February: State of the farm

Old rusty here is a great photo op, but unfortunately doesn't run. We need a working tractor to till our fields!
February weather has arrived. We've got warmer air and some trees are even blooming. I checked in with some of the community gardeners from the front of the park this week and the word is that it is time to seed peas. If you haven't gotten your potato seed yet you better hurry because in our area it's best to plant them third week of February. We began seeding tomatoes and eggplants a couple of weeks ago. It's a great time to seed or transplant brassicas and other cool season crops that don't require too much heat to germinate. We'll be breaking ground on our new 4-acre plot at the end of this month. For now we'll be using rented equipment as we work on a campaign to purchase our own tractor.
In terms of infrastructure our Village (The kitchen, farmstand, potluck area, packing, cooling, and storage sheds), is coming together nicely. Our new potluck area is complete, and the other buildings are well on their way. We've got the mud under control and the new shape of the farm is becoming apparent. But we still have many weeks of building to go. There is a lot of work out here - plenty of farm work, landscaping and construction - so we're doing our best to run efficient productive workdays that are also fun for everyone involved. Our Saturdays are gaining momentum as the days get warmer, so think about spending your Saturday with us, or come out during the week. There are still a couple of weeks left to enroll in the workday leader class - this will be a great time with lots of fun people and great information. Please consider making this commitment to the farm.
