October State of the Farm
/October is the time of year where we begin to feel the change of seasons, through the weather and our crops. Our cover crops are about to go in, and we are currently irrigating for our root vegetables. We are looking forward to a good crop of cilantro, radishes, carrots, cabbage, broccoli, leeks, onions, green onions, fava beans, and finally green peas.
We need to say goodbye to some of the dear vegetables that we love on the farm with the introduction of these new plants. This means that our basil, muskmelons, tomatillos and string beans are moving out. Tomatoes are also moving out, but they are not moving completely off the farm. They are making a short trip to the greenhouse. We are happy to announce that we will have hothouse tomatoes! We have even installed a solar panel onto our greenhouse to help run our fans! We are hoping that our greenhouse tomatoes will last us to December.
We also have some interesting produce that is growing in the fields. Be on the lookout for lemongrass in our farm stand and in your CSA boxes in the coming weeks. This grass is great in teas and can be added to a lot of soups to help the flavor pop. Another new crop is corn but not just your ordinary corn. Most people only ever get to enjoy the classic yellow or white corn, but in the coming months we are anxiously awaiting our BLUE CORN! Blue corn is sweeter and more nuttier than white corn. It’s also a better source of protein!
Lastly, we just wanted to give you an update on our battle with the relentless, pesky bagrada bug. We are going to implement a plan that appears to have worked for other farms in the area. We will attempt to trap the bug in a black pyramid trap using the sweet alyssum as a bait. We will keep you updated on this battle and how our efforts are going.
That’s all the news from the farm, so come on out and grab the last of the field tomatoes and basil. Hope to see you on the farm soon!
