Fall 2013 State of the Farm
/Reflecting back on our first year on six acres, our team of Veggielutionaries really have done an incredible job. This year to date we have grown over 53,000 lbs of food, filling 75 Farm boxes for 23 weeks, attending two farmer's markets during the summer and donating thousands of pounds of produce to volunteers and our soup kitchens to boot. With all of our new infrastructure in place, there ain't nothing stopping us now and we're looking forward to an even better 2014 season.
Work slowed down a bit during August and September while we prepared for the Bounty of Heart's Delight and transitioned into the 2013-2014 year of the Americorps program. During October we caught up with a lot of the fall planting and we continue to seed and transplant more fall crops including cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, kale, chard, carrots, beets, onions and garlic. Thanks to all of our student volunteers, the work is speeding up and we expect to get loads of farm maintenance done before the winter break
We're tearing out the summer fields of tomatoes and getting ready to put over half of the farm to rest during the winter. This "cover crop" period is extremely important to improving the quality of our soil, giving the soil ecosystem time to recuperate. After the last few years of being squeezed onto a small piece of land while trying to increase our production, having the luxury of more space enables us to make management decisions that keep the long-term health of the farm in mind.
We will soon be announcing the start of our new Farm Manager as I transition into more of an administrative role here at the farm. While I'll miss being a part of daily farm operations, I'm extremely excited to bring in fresh blood that will take the farm to the next level. So stay posted to meet our new leader!
